Important dates for TPS, Venezuela

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the extension of Venezuela’s 2021 Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for 18 months and a separate redesignation of Venezuela for TPS for 18 months.

Now that USCIS has officially extended TPS for Venezuelans, you need to be aware of the dates for re-registration.

  • If you currently have TPS based on Venezuela’s 2021 TPS designation (Venezuela 2021), you can keep your TPS through Sept. 10, 2025, if you re-register and continue to meet TPS eligibility requirements.

  • If you currently have a pending re-registration application, you do not need to file any additional re-registration application at this time.

  • If you do not have a pending re-registration application, the 60-day re-registration period for TPS beneficiaries under Venezuela 2021 begins Jan. 10, 2024, and ends March 10, 2024.

  • DHS recognizes that not all re-registrants may receive a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) before their current EAD expires. To ensure that these re-registrants do not see their employment authorization lapse, USCIS automatically extends through March 10, 2025, the validity of certain EADs previously issued to current Venezuela 2021 TPS beneficiaries.

  • USCIS will continue to process pending applications filed under Venezuela 2021. If you have an initial Venezuela TPS application pending as of Oct. 3, 2023, you do not need to file either application again. If they approve your pending application, they will grant you TPS through Sept. 10, 2025. Similarly, if they approve your pending TPS-related work permit, they will issue you a new EAD that will be valid through the same date.

If you are applying for TPS from Venezuela for the first time, you must apply now and before April 2, 2025.

  • If you are applying for initial TPS under the Venezuela 2023 redesignation, registration is open now through April 2, 2025.

  • You are eligible to apply if you:

o Are a Venezuelan national (or have no nationality and last habitually resided in Venezuela);

o Have continuously resided in the United States since July 31, 2023, and

o Have been continuously present in the United States since Oct. 3, 2023.

  • First-time Venezuelan TPS beneficiaries under Venezuela 2023 will receive TPS and EADs valid through April 2, 2025.
